What is Key Club?

Key Club also fosters leadership skills in club members.

David Roshu. One could say he’s one of Clackamas’ future Valedictorian. Another could say he’s one of the team captains in the Clackamas Track Team. However, undoubtedly he’s Key Club Vice President. One begs the question, however: What does a Key Club Vice President do? Heck, what even is Key Club?

To provide context, Key Club is an international service organization, whose goal is to help its community while also fostering leadership skills in club members. One has to ask though, how does Key Club help their communities? “We’re kind of like an organized method of being able to get volunteer experience,” David states, “so I believe Key Club can really help in finding the people willing to dedicate their time in service of the community.” Basically, Key Club is like the middleman between high school students and volunteer work, and it’s through Key Club that volunteer work becomes more accessible. Furtherly, through this volunteer work being done by students, it helps their communities as well. For example, giving supplies to people in need during the Winter Rage event, or planting trees in order to make the community’s environment a better place. Key Club does just that, and because of it, it helps the community.

Key Club also fosters leadership skills in club members. Heck, David’s main reason to join Key Club and become an officer was to develop his leadership skills. “I wanted to gain valuable leadership experience while also being in a position that would allow me to make a positive impact on the community,”. Basically, Key Club is also like a training camp for students to join in order to develop their leadership skills! David also says that teamwork is developed as well, saying, “The most important skills to have as an officer is great diligence and a good sense of teamwork,” meaning that in order to become an officer, people will have to develop their teamwork skills, which is amazing and very useful in the future. Not only does it help the community, but instills life skills in young students that they will use for the rest of their lives.

What does an officer of Key Club do, however? “Every officer of Key Club generally has the same duty which is just to run the club,” says David, “but with my position more specifically I basically assisted the club president in all of their presidential duties.” However, as a key club officer there comes hard times managing student work and club work, David stated “Working on forms or presentations on top of all the homework we had due the next day,”. So, as shown, it takes hard work to maintain the officer position.

Nevertheless, despite all of the work Key Club officers have to do, the positives outweigh the negatives. You get to volunteer in events, which as stated by David, the most fun part was, “Just the volunteer events in general,”. You get to help out your community which gives you a sense of fulfillment, and lastly, you get to develop lifelong skills needed in the future. It’s like a super good mega deal! All in all, Key Club is an amazing experience, and you should join it because, as stated by David, “It is an amazing way to get volunteer experience and have fun while doing so. It is an awesome community to be a part of and I for one definitely am very happy that I’ve been in it for all of my time in high school.”
