Clackamas High School’s Dance Team

Competition season is here! Dance is one of many winter sports starting to compete. Competitions are fun- home competitions are too, but for the hosting team, it is all hands on deck. On Saturday, November 11th, the dancers on the Clackamas High School dance team hosted the first competition of the fall season. Dancers started to arrive around 6 am to check in and get escorted to their assigned classrooms. An early morning for most, but dancers are used to it. Once in their room, teams have begun hair and make-up while waiting for floor practice. A floor practice is a time for teams to run through their routines before the rounds begin. Once done with that, teams continued to get ready and eat breakfast.

Round one began at 11:00 am. This round included 1-5A contemporary, 6A contemporary, 6A jazz, sophomore/junior solos, senior solos, and duo/trios. All teams participated in novice and advanced drill down. Clackamas took first in both 6A contemporary and 6A jazz, clean sweeping there home competition. Valley Catholic took first in 1A-5A contemporary, Canby took first in modern, and South Albany took first in 1A-5A jazz. All well deserved victories for all teams.

Following a short break round 2 began at 3 pm. This round included 1A-5A hip-hop, 6A hip-hop, 1A-6A pom, and 1A-6A novelty. Clackamas did not compete in any of these categories but still cheered on the other teams from the bleachers. There was also a drill down at the end of this round. Following drill down, awards were announced. Lakeridge took first in 6A hip-hop, Lebanon took first in 1A-5A hip-hop and pom, and sprague took first in novelty. A great round to wrap up a great competition. Many coaches and dancers complimented the Clackamas dance team by saying how kind, respectful, and helpful they all were. The Clackamas coaches were very happy about how they day went and very proud of their dancers for helping.

After the competition concluded teams packed up and went home. The Clackamas dance team and parents stayed to clean up all the classrooms, the cafeteria, and the gym before heading home. They made sure everything was put back exactly where it was supposed to be. This is only the first competition but a great start to the season for many, but only time will tell. Good luck to all teams to the rest of your season!
