Racism Highlighted Nationally

Racism+Highlighted+Nationally

Racism has always been a problem and, though it has slowly gotten better, Covington Catholic High School has recently has had a huge problem with racism in its school. How would other schools react to this kind of racism?

Students from Covington Catholic High School were waiting for there bus on the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. when an older native American man orial the students moved out of the way. One kid named Nick Sandmann didn’t move. He stood in the man’s way and didn’t let get to the memorial. He stood in front of him and smirked which was extremely disrespectful

In an interview, Nick claimed that in staring down Phillips (the Native American man) he thought he was “remaining motionless and calm to help diffuse the situation.” which doesn’t make sense because confronting the man and not letting him through did the exact opposite of defusing. He smirked and stared him down, creating racial tension. Donald trump defended Nick in a tweet when he said “Looking like Nick Sandman & Covington Catholic students were treated unfairly with early judgements proving out to be false – smeared by media. Not good, but making big comeback!”

This type of thing can happen to any school so how would other school districts react to their students if there schools students did this type of action. Rex Putnam’s motto on the website is “Spirit in Everything. Pride in all.” “Racism is not tolerated is any way at this school. There are very hard punishments for any type of racism that could occur.” according to Principal Ryan Richardson

To avoid hate and things used against them in legal issues, in addition to the school being temporarily shut down, they also shut down the Covington Catholic High School Website. Since the Nick Sandmann incident, the school has been getting caught with new evidence with racism at the school, like teachers leading students in black faced chants at basketball games, sexually harassing girls etc, and shutting down there website is extremely suspicious

Racism can not be tolerated anymore. Especially obvious, extreme racism, like at Covington Catholic High School. Other schools like Rex Putnam are a lot better in there policies about racism but no school is perfect and every district should keep working towards equality in the schools in any way they can.
