The Curse Ends For The Kingsmen

Every year at Rex Putnam High School, hundreds of students participate in the legendary RPHS homecoming week. The thing that sets this celebration apart from the way most schools do homecoming is the after party. An average homecoming week has a football game and a formal dance. At Putnam, there is no formal dance, people tend to celebrate in the clothes they came to school in. The after party is held either in the commons or the gym where students can be found consuming copious amounts of pizza and playing video games.

Another component of the RPHS homecoming celebration that sets it apart from other schools is the race for the Kingsman Cup. To win the Kingsman Cup, a grade level must have more points than the other grade levels. Points are awarded by competing hallway decorations, finding “spirit balls” hidden across the campus by staff and leadership and by the lip-sync competition.

“I don’t know, but I have confidence in our team.” says  student Laresa Mychchuk. She participates in homecoming to be a part of her school, although she dislikes the way Putnam does the celebrations. Some other students agree. For instance Faith Vadelund exclaimed,“ I wished we dressed up.”

For other students, the casual dress code of the celebration is the best part “I like the way homecoming is. Mainly because I don’t have to rent a suit or anything. It feels like a big hang-out session.” said Brad Fussel.

The tradition of the Kingsman cup was brought home by the class of 2018. Everyone predicted that the seniors would win, and sure enough they did. One student even claimed the the whole game is “rigged”. “Anyone wonder why the seniors always win? Exactly, it’s rigged. The sophomore performance at lip sync was obviously better, but we won anyway.”

The Milwaukie football team remained undefeated in league play until last Friday. Putnam students were ecstatic at the big win for their team 14-7. The “Homecoming Curse”

RPHS Homecoming

is a superstition where Putnam always loses the homecoming game. Marissa Bradshaw said, “I wasn’t sure if they were going to win, but it was nice to see them break the homecoming curse.”
