Don’t just put it off, especially when your grades depend on it.

Procrastination is a problem that is becoming more and more of an issue, especially for teens and young adults. For some people, procrastination is like oxygen, something they couldn’t live without. This is a problem that many people struggle with, but don’t know how to cope with. Here are a few people who have dealt with, and observed the serious effects of procrastination.

In an interview with Mrs. Brown at Milwaukie High School, she talked about how procrastination is affecting her teaching, and how it’s affecting her students. She said, “I often find that my student’s work is less thoughtful, the quality isn’t as good, and they seem like they don’t quite understand what they’re doing”.  She said that for example, if a student was working on a big essay and they kept putting it off, it would affect their ability to revise, and they would completely lose the information that they are learning. Some tips that she gave were to set small goals, and when you meet them, reward yourself. She thinks that the main reason for procrastination is that kids often have more preferred tasks, especially since most students have a phone and access to the internet. When they get so wrapped up in something, it makes it hard for them to start the project or assignment.

Celest Kara is a student at Milwaukie High School, and they said that when they procrastinate, it makes it hard for them to do their work, then their grades go down, and they get very overwhelmed. They say that when they procrastinate on multiple things, it feels like the world is pushing against them, and they feel like their life is out of control. Some tips that they gave were to turn off your phone, and any other possible distractions. They said that you should also set screen time limits so that you don’t spend hours upon hours on your device.

Another student who was interviewed was Paloma Wells. She is also a student who attends Milwaukie High School and struggles with procrastination as well. She says that when she procrastinates, she isn’t able to get her tasks done efficiently or quickly, and that often results in late school work. “The hardest thing about procrastinating is that when I have to do something that I put off, I find myself wishing that I had done it sooner. I wished that I would have done it when it was easier to do, and I had more time to do it”, she said during the interview. Finally, some tips that she gave were to try to use motivators and make a planned schedule for what you need to do.

Rachael Marges is the mother of a student who is enrolled in Milwaukie High School. She said, “By procrastinating on doing things, they miss out on absorbing the information on the work, and they don’t take what they would have learned with them”. She says that she often wants to leave the harder things to do last, and over time she then ends up with a big pile of hard papers, and work to do. “It gets very overwhelming, and my work then usually isn’t very well done”, she said in the interview. Her idea of why people procrastinate is that everyone is a little bit lazy by nature and that if it’s not something someone wants to do and they don’t find value in it, then they obviously won’t be interested in starting or completing it. The tip that she gave for people who struggle with procrastination is that since everyone is different, you have to figure out what works for you and that you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment with different strategies.

Procrastination is becoming more and more of a problem for teens, and young adults. Some people view it as waiting for the big drop on a roller coaster. All of the seconds add up to one another, and then when it finally happens, you have a huge rush of adrenaline rushing through you, and your head starts to spin. These are just a few people who are and have witnessed the consequences of procrastination. P
